2007 - Present
Diego Blanco profoundly understands the impact his experience as a young boy, recently migrated to the United States with his father from Colombia, served to shape his future. Refusing to leave his house for over three months upon his arrival, he feared the United States, his language barrier, and his ability to find and fit in with new friends. Searching for ways to bring his son out of this stage of isolation, his father brought him to a local Tango class. Diego, becoming enamored from the first moment he accomplished the execution of the very first few steps, soon was enrolled in weekly classes studying Argentine Tango with Jorge Nel Girado, one of the pioneers of the growth of Argentine Tango within the United States. It was not long before Mr. Nel invited the young Diego to become a member of his performance dance troop.
Soon thereafter, Diego chose to attend a public middle school in one of Miami’s most underdeveloped neighborhoods in order to take advantage of its program in Modern and Classical dance. This experience led to his eventual high school enrollment and college graduation from Miami’s prestigious New World School of the Arts. Diego Blanco is well aware of how New World School of the Arts changed his life as a dancer. Trained in legendary dance techniques such as Limon, Horton, Graham, Muller and Classical, he possesses a refined understanding of the correlation of the discipline of the mind and the ability to move the body. Diego continues to study dance technique several times a week under the tutelage of Jennifer Muller. Particularly fond of the Muller technique, which is based upon the application of the body’s polar energy through the use of imagery instead of tension, Diego finds he is able to apply Muller to his teaching and performance of Argentine Tango.
An accomplished professional, Diego has studied Argentine Tango with internationally recognized professionals as Jorge Nel Girado, Osvaldo Zotto, Lorena Ermocida, Fabian Salas, Fernanda Ghi, Guillermo Merlo and Los Dinzel. Recently he has traveled to Argentina studying under the guidance of Carlos Perez, Julio Balmaceda and Corina de la Rosa.
Diego’s professional career history includes several performances with Argentine Tango Productions throughout the U.S. and the Caribbean together with the Florida Chamber Orchestra, the Miami Contemporary Dance Company, and New World School of the Arts. Most recently he has appeared in productions New York City Culture Fest, It Takes More Than Two, Let’s Speak Tango, The Four Seasons, Gardel and in Jennifer Muller’s Passion Fruit, the last two productions for which he as well, served assisting as choreographer. He has performed for the Baryshnikov Award ceremony during the 24th annual gala for the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts and is currently performing with Diego di Falco and Carolina Zokalski as a member of their New York Tango Dance Company, including the annual New Jersey Tango Extravaganza. Diego Blanco teaches in cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. In New York, he can most often be found teaching at Dance Manhattan, Stepping Out Studios, La Boca, Lafayette Grill, Stardust Dance Productions, and his home base Argentine Tango Lovers of Long Island. Quickly becoming one of the top performers in New York, his innovative, energetic style fuses traditional close embrace Argentine Tango with the current developing style of Nuevo Tango.
