For over ten years Sean Erwin has balanced a life of academia with his never-ending pursuit of the art of Argentine Tango. A rare find, Sean is equally motivated by the complexity of the discoveries of an analytical mind and stirred by the pure emotions expressed when the body moves in response to music.As far back as 1995, Sean, who holds a PhD in Philosophy from Vanderbilt, found Tango. His motivation, at the time, was merely a simple smile from a pretty girl on her way to a Tango class. Although he never saw her again, little did he know her smile would open up an entirely new journey for Sean. From that moment on, he never missed a tango class. Sean couldn’t believe that he had finally encountered a dance – much less a subject – that could conceivably be taught with the same degree of analysis and care that he had encountered in other dances and even other subjects entirely outside of dance. Yet he seemed still to be on the outside of a whole spectrum for creativity and spontaneity that he knew was possible in the movements available to tango; he knew of few teachers trained or touring in the US that he judged capable of tapping into the kind of possibilities for movement that so attracted him.

His thirst for understanding has taken him through Europe, Buenos Aires and the United States. Under the guidance of professional dancers and instructors Andrea Misse, Gabriel Misse and Leandro Palou he has learned that Tango can be taught and taught well – with the same degree of clarity one might ask for in a class on languages or mathematics.

Sean believes Tango is a dance that can be directed outside its conventional forms, as it has a frontier that lies well beyond the re-enactment of stage spectacles; allowing for the possibility one respond authentically from within, expressing who we are to the music as it happens in the moment.

For over fifteen years, Sean Erwin has taught and performed Argentine tango.
