Yanira Collado brings a unique sensitivity to her role as tango instructor. While she has taught tango for almost a decade, her experience with arts education as social engagement extends beyond dance. After graduating from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida, and studying on full scholarship at the Museum School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she spent many years teaching art to children in and out of Charter Schools in Chicago and Pennsylvania. She worked with children and adults with mental and physical disabilities through Little City Foundation, and has served as an Arts Grant panelist for the city of Evanston, Illinois.

From Yanira’s first contact with tango twelve years ago, she has immersed herself in an intense apprenticeship to the dance and its pedagogy. She has studied and taught under a “dizzying array of teachers” in Chicago, Buenos Aires, and Europe. Gabriela Gonzales first introduced her to techniques allowing whole body engagement in response to the lead; Yanira built upon this base with Andrea Misse, Leandro Palou and Gabriel Misse, deepening her exploration of the expressive power and strength in the follower’s role. She has gained unique access to tango’s boundless possibilities for movement, communication and self-discovery. Along the path to this expansive understanding of her art, she has gained a reputation – in both Chicago and Miami –as one of the most skillful and accomplished teachers of the art of the follower.

With her often partner Sean Erwin, Yanira has traveled the United States as a teacher and performer. From a fundamental understanding of tango as a social art, they bring their stage tango to the frontiers of the form, finding ways to move outside the traditional shapes and patterns of tango while honoring its essential language of expressivity.

Yanira also co-founded Tango Noticias, a tango web magazine for Chicago and the Midwest.
